Beyond “I’m Fine”: Building Authentic Conversations at Work

How often do you hear—or say—“I’m fine” at work? It’s a reflex. Safe. Quick. But for leaders and coworkers alike, defaulting to this phrase can limit genuine connection, stall collaboration, and keep the workplace from being a space where people truly feel seen.
At REALiving®, we encourage a different approach: small, intentional shifts in how you check in with others—and yourself. Instead of the automatic “I’m fine,” try asking or sharing:
“I’ve had a challenging morning. How about you?”
“I’m feeling a bit overwhelmed; what’s your day looking like?”
“Something exciting happened today. Want to hear about it?”
These questions and statements open doors. They invite honesty, build trust, and encourage a culture where colleagues support each other beyond surface-level exchanges.
Why This Matters
Research shows that authentic workplace connections improve engagement, reduce stress, and increase productivity. When team members feel comfortable expressing real feelings—both highs and lows—they are more likely to collaborate effectively, innovate, and feel satisfied in their work.

How REALiving Can Help
REALiving professional coaching supports employees and organizations in creating these deeper connections. For EAP clients, we offer four free coaching sessions, providing a safe space to explore communication skills, stress management, and workplace well-being.
We also work with anyone outside of an EAP contract, including individuals and groups, to cultivate communication skills, strengthen teamwork, and enhance emotional intelligence. Group coaching sessions are a great way for teams to practice authentic conversations in a supportive setting.
Authentic conversations don’t happen by accident—they’re built with intention, guidance, and practice. Start small. Ask better questions. Share honestly. And know that support is available if you want to take it further.
